Small group teaching: Methods & Techniques

Dr Nathan Roberts

Published 02 Dec 2016 • 4 min read

‘Mixing it up’ is important. You can’t please all the people all the time but designing your small group teaching session with ‘variety’ in mind allows your learners to work in their comfort zones for some of the time and provides them with new challenges at others. Different methods facilitate different kinds of student engagement and provide different opportunities to learn.

Marking, grading and giving feedback

Published 23 Dec 2016 • 20 mins read

This set of materials is intended to provide guidance and support for those who are new to assessing and giving feedback and who are asked to implement an existing assessment process. The emphasis here is to provide practical help in doing the marking you are asked to do, however, there will also be some opportunity to think about assessment more broadly and to critique the approaches we use particularly in UK Higher Education

What is Demonstrating? Demonstrating is a common term used to describe the role played by PGRs and Researchers in practical and laboratory classes and sometimes also in fieldwork sessions. Demonstrating implies showing somebody how to do something – and in essence this is the case for laboratory demonstrators. They work, proactively and interactively with learners helping them gain practical skills and deeper understanding of their subject.
