PHP2 - Using mySQL with PHP for the Web

This course covers the fundamentals of designing and building a relational database for the web using MySQL, and the interface between the mySQL server and the PHP scripting engine.

You will learn to design and build database tables and use them to produce dynamic website applications. The basic syntax of SQL, as is applicable to mySQL, is taught on the course.

This course is ideal if you already have some knowledge of the PHP programming language. This course assumes knowledge of the topics covered in the PHP scripting for the Web module.

Learning and teaching

This module includes a mix of traditional lectures and laboratory sessions. Each meeting starts with a lecture and finishes with a laboratory session.

The course syllabus comprises of:

• structure of mySQL and its PHP API and relationship to the PHP scripting engine and web server
• introduction to relational databases and normalisation and basic database design
• the PHP/mySQL interface
• basic constructs and syntax of SQL
• advanced features of SQL such as joining tables
• mySQL database creation and management.

Coursework and assessment

To award credits we need to have evidence of the knowledge and skills you have gained or improved. Some of this has to be in a form that can be shown to external examiners so that we can be absolutely sure that standards are met across all courses and subjects.

During the course, you will be given assignments to be submitted to the course tutor. At the end of the course, there will be a class test.

The most important element of assessment is that it should enhance your learning. Our methods are designed to increase your confidence and we try very hard to devise ways of assessing you that are enjoyable and suitable for adults with busy lives.
