Do you want to make a difference, not just a choice?

Our midwifery programme is an innovative, popular and rewarding career. Our programme provides you with the skills and knowledge to become a registered midwife after 3 years and offering you the opportunity to make a real difference to people’s lives; a value that few other professions can offer.

The role midwives play in preparing women for the delivery of new life makes them a vital presence during all stages of pregnancy, labour and the early postnatal period. You’ll be the expert on childbirth and so your responsibilities are diverse. As a qualified midwife you’ll provide full antenatal care, identify, refer and co-ordinate the care for women with high-risk pregnancies, monitor all women and support them during labour and teach new mothers how to feed and care for their babies. You will be working with women from a variety of backgrounds so you will need to be confident enough to communicate and support different people in a variety of situations.

With 100% of our students satisfied with our course (UNISTATS) you will gain a comprehensive understanding in a supportive environment around both the science and art of midwifery. The science of midwifery includes biological principles, research, methods of inquiry, decision making, assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating care. Whilst the art of midwifery focuses on communication and the approach to delivering care, encompassing genuine caring, respect, sensitivity, and valuing the uniqueness of individuals in a culturally diverse society. This will enable you to deliver high quality midwifery care in a rapidly changing environment.

You will be taught by motivated and knowledgeable lecturers in the field of midwifery who are influencing healthcare across Wales and beyond through engagement and research. This is demonstrated by our University being part of the only Collaborating Centre for the World Health Organisation in Europe focused exclusively on midwifery development.

You will specialise in midwifery from the start of the course and you will practice your skills in our clinical simulation suite which enables you to learn in a realistic midwifery ward with simulated mother and baby. These lifelike simulations mean you can safely practice and develop essential skills, developing your confidence and expertise before going out into placement.

You will spend approximately 50% of your time on placement. We have close working relationships with two large service providers in South Wales and so your learning will take place both in hospitals and in the community in a range of environments, enhancing experience in caring for women from a variety of cultures with differing needs. You will benefit from placements supported by experienced midwife educators to help you in becoming the best midwife you can be. During your first year you will participate in the care of women in low risk environments such as community teams and midwifery led birth units. In your second year, the emphasis will move to high risk and complex care needs of mother and baby and placements will in the main be in obstetric led units. You will also experience placements in accident and emergency department, gynaecological wards and neonatal units. There is also an opportunity for you to undertake a placement learning opportunity in a different environment, either within the UK or overseas.

This degree will lead to eligibility to register with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) as a Midwife. On qualification, you can work in a range of healthcare settings, both in the United Kingdom and abroad.

Above all else, we strive to ensure that our graduates are ready for the next step in their career and the many opportunities that await them. That’s why 100% of our midwifery students are in employment or further study within 6 months of graduating (UNISTATS).

International Students

We regret that this course is unable to accept applications from international fee-status applicants.

Nodweddion nodedig

As a midwifery programme, with a family feel, we’ll help you to enjoy an academically rich and fulfilling experience throughout your time at Cardiff University. Here are some of the key features of why we think our programme will make you the best Midwife that you can be:

  • Our programme is validated by the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC);

  •  The School is designated as a Collaborating Centre for Midwifery Development with the World Health Organisation (WHO), the only such unit in the European region. This initiative is an excellent opportunity to contribute to the important work of WHO and to strengthening the Midwifery profession across Europe;

  • You’ll have the option to choose a fully funded place on the programme.  A full NHS bursary, including tuition fees and a non-repayable bursary for living costs, is available for this programme providing you agree to work in Wales for two years after qualifying;

  • During year two, there is an opportunity for you to undertake a placement learning opportunity in a different environment, either within the UK or overseas;

  • We have a highly-equipped clinical simulation suite which enables you to learn in a realistic midwifery ward with simulated mother and baby. These lifelike simulations mean you can safely practice and develop essential skills, developing your confidence and expertise before going out into placement.

  • You’ll be studying at a Russell Group University which supports a strong research profile and evidence-based learning. This is evident throughout the programme, with application and implementation of research and evidence based practice being key to all learning and teaching activities. This is enhanced by the School's Chair of Midwifery, the Royal College of Midwives (RCM) Professor of Midwifery, Reader and Research Associate roles. Students and graduates will be equipped with the capacity to develop their knowledge, and where possible, participate in research studies and to contribute to collaborations locally, nationally and globally

  • The School provides courses recognised by the UK Health and Care Professions Council in occupational therapy, operating department practice, physiotherapy, diagnostic radiography and imaging and radiotherapy and oncology. It also provides pre-registration courses in nursing and midwifery. This contributes to a vibrant interdisciplinary environment, with opportunities for shared learning and inter-professional education not available at many institutions;

  • 100% of our midwifery students are in employment or further study after 6 months of graduating (UNISTATS).

Strwythur y cwrs

The course is comprised of approximately 50% theory and 50% practice, integrating both in a modular structure throughout three years. All modules are compulsory and credit rated. By successfully completing each module, you will accumulate credits towards the award of a degree, and entry onto the Professional Register.

Mae'r modiwlau a ddangosir yn esiampl o'r cwricwlwm arferol. Byddant yn cael eu hadolygu cyn blwyddyn academaidd 2019/20. Bydd y modiwlau terfynol yn cael eu cyhoeddi erbyn mis Medi 2019

Blwyddyn un

In year one you will be introduced to the academic knowledge and practice of midwifery. The emphasis is on normal midwifery, as childbirth is a normal physiological life event for the majority of healthy women. You will be exposed to the theory and practice of normal midwifery and related key skills through relevant knowledge and clinical experience.

The taught modules in year one total 120 credits. All are core (compulsory).

Blwyddyn dau

In year two you will adapt and develop your existing knowledge, skills and attitudes to provide safe and effective care for women during normal and complicated pregnancy and childbirth. You will have additional short placements in an Accident and Emergency department, a gynaecological ward and a neonatal unit.

The taught modules in year two total 120 credits. All are core (compulsory).

Blwyddyn tri

In year three, your existing knowledge, skills and attitudes will develop to enable the provision of effective care for women and babies throughout pregnancy, labour and the puerperium. Clinical placements will reflect this. It is expected at this time that the student moves towards working under indirect supervision of the mentor in order to develop confidence and independence and to undertake complex activities that can be safely and responsibly delegated.

Throughout the three years of the programme you will have the opportunity for involvement in case holding in the form of a continuity of care scheme. As part of this scheme you will follow the care of between 3 and 5 women throughout the antenatal, intrapartum and postnatal period.

The taught modules in year three total 120 credits. All are core (compulsory).

Mae'r Brifysgol wedi ymrwymo i ddarparu amrywiaeth eang o opsiynau modiwl lle’n bosibl. Ond byddwch yn ymwybodol er y byddwn yn gwneud pob ymdrech i gynnig dewis, gall hyn gael ei gyfyngu mewn rhai amgylchiadau. Y rheswm am hyn yw'r ffaith mai dim ond nifer cyfyngedig o leoedd sydd ar gael ar rai modiwlau, a gaiff eu dyrannu ar sail y cyntaf i'r felin. Mae'n ofynnol i fodiwlau eraill sicrhau isafswm nifer o fyfyrwyr cyn gallu eu cynnal, er mwyn gwneud yn siŵr y gellir cyflwyno addysg o ansawdd priodol. Gall modiwlau gael eu cyfyngu oherwydd gwrthdaro yn yr amserlen hefyd, ac er bod y Brifysgol yn ymdrechu i amharu cyn lleied â phosibl ar eich dewis, byddai'n syniad da i chi ofyn am gyngor gan yr Ysgol berthnasol am y dewisiadau modiwl sydd ar gael.
