This course will enable you to further develop your oral, aural and written French in order to express yourselves confidently on most general topics, without much conspicuous searching for words, using some complex sentence forms to do so.
You will consolidate and expand your understanding of the structure of the language and of the culture of French speaking countries. The following themes will be covered: tourism, gastronomy, health, women in French society, the European Union and French political organisation.
This course is for you if you had four years of part-time tuition in French or recently completed an A Level in French. Of course, having recently done a Higher Intermediate French Stage D would also be suitable.
Taking this course can contribute to both the pathway to a degree in translation and the pathway to a degree in modern languages.

Learning and teaching
The emphasis of the course is on participation therefore students are encouraged to actively participate in class through various forms of activities designed to stimulate communication.
Coursework and assessment
For us, the most important element of assessment is that it should enhance your learning. Our methods are designed to increase your confidence and we try very hard to devise ways of assessing you that are enjoyable and suitable for adults with busy lives.
To award credits we need to have evidence of the knowledge and skills you have gained or improved.
Some of this has to be in a form that can be shown to external examiners so that we can be absolutely sure that standards are met across all courses and subjects.
The assessment of this course is divided into four parts to assess each of the following skills: speaking, listening, reading and writing. It is designed to enhance what you have learnt during the course.
Additionally to the weekly sessions, we recommend that you spend some time between the lessons, either revising and practising what has been done in class and/or trying to read the press or listening to radio in order to develop your understand of authentic French.

We would like you to try and read newspapers and magazines on a regular basis; in the library, we receive the following periodicals which would be most suitable for you: Ca m'interesse, Science et Vie, L'Express, Marianne, Le Monde Dossiers et Documents, Le Francais dans le Monde.
