The central aim of Sociology is to cultivate in students the 'sociological imagination' needed to understand how individual actions and beliefs shape, and are shaped by, the social world around them.

Our expertise includes childhood, youth and ageing, the study of sexuality, health and the body, the construction and reconstruction of identities, the rise of consumer culture, and the profound transformations to social, culture and private life which economic and technological globalisation have delivered.

I chose sociology because I wanted to study a subject that examined human behaviour and social organisation from ‘outside the box’. I was gripped from my first introductory lecture, and was blown away by the breadth and diversity of the modules throughout.
