Community Gateway sponsored 50 Grangetown residents to complete the IAAF World Half Marathon in March 2016.

The idea

To support the 'Healthy and Active Grangetown' theme Community Gateway sponsored 50 places in the Cardiff IAAF World Half Marathon in March 2016.

These places were advertised to Grangetown residents and those interested were asked to apply through Run4Wales stating why they should be awarded a free place. The chosen 50 were supported by Community Gateway and Cardiff University in their training for the 13 mile race around the city with a full 12 week training programme and membership of an exclusive social media support network.

Successful applicants were also given the opportunity to take part in a research project through Cardiff University that will offer training advice through videos on how to prevent injury and other useful tips.

Progress

The majority of the Grangetown runners finished the 13 mile race including Community Gateway's Facilities and Partnership Manager Ali Abdi. Many runners now plan to complete the Cardiff Half Marathon in October 2016.

Next steps

A resident led community running group Run Grangetown was launched in 2016 and holds regular runs every week around Grangetown.
