Cardiff University's School of Medicine launches PACE project - promoting academic excellence within the Grangetown community.
The idea
The idea for PACE was developed after the Grangetown Careers and Role Model Week 2018 held a joint Medical School and Health Care Sciences Workshop. This was a very well-attended session by both local children and their parents with lots of interest in careers in this area.
Widening access to healthcare professions is a key goal for the School of Medicine and this project aims to support and stimulate student academic development and encourage aspirations. The PACE project's focus is on Year 9 students at local catchment high schools and aims to support and develop their interests into a career in a healthcare profession.
The project is starting with pupils at local secondary school, Fitzalan High School.
Progress
The School of Medicine is working closely with Community Gateway's partnership manager, Ali Abdi, to develop and launch the project. Activities will include:
- weekly tutorial sessions for students in Grangetown
- tutor and student led sessions
- access to University facilities
- recruitment of Cardiff University student role models
- regular science workshops delivered at the partner school
- interactive signup event for parents and students.
Next steps
This is a five-year project and success will be monitored closely, with hope that similar projects will be possible in future years.
