MBBCh Medicine

Last updated: 15/09/2023 09:53

Studying Medicine will be both exciting and daunting, bringing new challenges that will help you become the best doctor you can be.

Congratulations on being offered a place at Cardiff University. We are looking forward to welcoming you as you start your studies, and are working hard to ensure that you will be living and learning safely.

To help you settle into student life, we are busy planning induction activities where you will have the opportunity to get to know both staff and your Academic School.

Undergraduate induction 2023/24 - Medicine (MBBCh) A100

On Monday 25 September 2023, you will be collected from your halls of residence by the student-led Medical Society (MedSoc). They will walk with you to University Hospital Wales Heath Campus and you will have the opportunity to meet some fellow medical students.

The Welcome and Introduction talks will start at 09:00. These talks will include advice from the Year 1 Team as to how to manage your timetable, if you are not yet familiar with MyTimeTable (MyTT, the online resource you will be using through your course of studies).

Every day during your Introduction Week (Monday 25 September - Friday 29 September) will be populated with course-related student activities between 09:00-17:00.  These will be delivered through a blend of in person lectures, in person activities and online interactive resources.

How to prepare for Introduction Week:

  • make sure you have started your DBS Check and that it is underway (see Compulsory Forms and Insurance section below)
  • familiarise yourself with the different campuses – the building names, toilets and places to get food and drink
  • find your favourite and most comfortable shoes
  • have a look at the important course information resources and reading lists available to you (see preparatory reading below)
  • you will be required to log your attendance at different events using the School Management System App and QR codes

Just in case, you can also:

  1. Download the SafeZone App.
  2. Bring COVID Lateral Flow tests. You will be studying on a hospital campus and working with patients. As a medical student, we will expect you to act responsibly and professionally to keep patients, your colleagues and yourself safe.  We ask you to test for COVID, if you present with COVID related symptoms and follow the guidelines we will provide you.
  3. You may wish to wear a medical face covering. If you do, may we recommend the professional grade FFPII – Type 2R Fluid Resistant Face Masks.

Once you have access to the Cardiff University Student Intranet, you can start investigating what the University and Students’ Union have to offer. You can also familiarise yourself with MyTimeTable and the library as well as downloading the SafeZone App. Please read the other information below to ensure you are as prepared as you can be.

Other information

Library reading list

You can access an online introduction to the library service at Cardiff University to help prepare you for your first few weeks.

Once you have enrolled you can access the list of books that you will use to aid your study during the first year of the course. Copies of recommended textbooks are kept at the Health Library in the Cochrane Building, but you might want to consider purchasing some of them.

Access the reading list and online material.

General Medical Council

The General Medical Council (GMC) is the body responsible for ensuring high standards in all aspects of medicine, including medical education.

It's a very useful resource, and we would encourage you to read the information for medical students and their guidance on good medical practice before starting the programme.

Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check

Please see information on Information for Dentistry, Healthcare and Medicine students.

Please start your DBS check as soon as possible – it can take 2 months to complete.

Within your first three weeks of study, there will be an audit to confirm that the DBS check is complete. Failure to complete the DBS check will prevent you from continuing your studies. To return to studies we would need evidence that it is complete.

Occupational health check form

Please see information on Information for Dentistry, Healthcare and Medicine students

Medical indemnity cover

When you arrive, we provide you with more information about medical indemnity cover and why you will need it. You will also have a chance to meet with representatives from organisations offering medical indemnity cover.

In the meantime, you can browse the Medical Defence Union's website and learn more about the Medical Protection Society's free student membership scheme.

As a medical student, you now can join a range of clubs and societies at the Students' Union that can help you to adjust to life at university, keep fit, make new friends and immerse yourself into Cardiff's medical community.

Medical Societies

Cardiff Student Medical Society (MedSoc)

Representing student opinions to the School of Medicine, the Student Union's biggest society also runs events and offers a welfare committee for students who need extra support. A membership also entitles you to discounts at these events in addition to local bars and restaurants.

Other medical societies

You can also join one of many medical societies offered through the Students' Union, including the Medics Revision Society, Surgical Society and the Sports and Exercise Medicine Society. Find the full list on the Students' Union website.

Sports clubs

There are a range of opportunities to represent the School of Medicine through sports like hockey, netball, rugby, football and more. See what's available on the Students' Union website.
