The £30m Hadyn Ellis building brings together experts in conditions such as schizophrenia, Alzheimer's disease and stem cell cancer research for the first time.

In brief

  • Completed: November 2013
  • Cost: £30m
  • Architect: Nightingale Associates
  • Contractor: BAM Construction

The building houses the University's flagship European Cancer Stem Cell Research Institute and Neuroscience and Mental Health Research Institutes. There are laboratories for the MRC Centre for Neuropsychiatric Genetics and Genomics. The building also houses the Doctoral Academy, a 150-person theatre and a public exhibition space.

The building is named in honour of the late deputy Vice-Chancellor of the University and pioneering cognitive psychologist, Professor Hadyn Ellis.

Award winning design

The Hadyn Ellis Building won the Higher Education category of the Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method (BREEAM) Awards Wales 2012. This is a major award that recognises the sustainability of the new building.

The Building Research Establishment makes BREEAM Awards to the highest scoring buildings to have been rated as "excellent" for their all-round approach to the environment.
