Scholarships for studying in Welsh

Cynnig Caerdydd Bursary

A bursary is available from the university if you choose to study through the medium of Welsh.

Amount: up to £500 each year

For every 20 credits you study in Welsh each year, you will receive £250; for every 40 credits you study in Welsh each year, you will receive £500. The most you could get is £500.

To apply for this bursary, complete the Cynnig Caerdydd Bursary application form (available in Welsh only) and email it to the university's Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol Branch Officer, Elliw Iwan, at iwaneh@cardiff.ac.uk

If you have already received a Coleg Cymraeg Incentive Scholarship, Coleg Cymraeg Main Scholarship, or the Medicine/Doctors of Tomorrow Scholarship, you are not eligible to apply for the university's Cynnig Caerdydd Bursary.

Betty Campbell Scholarship

Applications for the Betty Campbell Scholarship are now closed. This scholarship is for students already enrolled on a programme to study at Cardiff University. Further information is available on the student intranet.

Amount: up to £1,000 each year

The scholarship is open to all students studying at least 20 credits each year through the medium of Welsh.

We particularly welcome applications from students who may face obstacles or have uncertainties about studying in Welsh at the university level.

Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol scholarships

You can apply for Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol scholarships when you join the Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol.

The application window for entry in September 2027 will be open on 9 September 2026.

Amount: £3,000 over three years

You are eligible if you study at least 66% (80 credits) of your course each year through the medium of Welsh and begin your studies in September 2025.

A limited number of Main Scholarships are available; the university will nominate individuals to receive this scholarship.

The application window for the 2026/27 academic year will open on 13 August 2026.

Amount: £1,500 over 3 years (£500 a year)

You are eligible if you study at least 33% of your course (40 credits) in any subject each year through the medium of Welsh and will begin your studies in September or October 2024.

Amount: £2,500 over 5 years (£500 each year)

You are eligible if you're applying for a Medicine course and studying at least 33% of your course (40 credits) each year in Welsh.

Amount: £1,500 over 3 years (£500 each year)

You are eligible as a nursing student if you study at least 33% (40 credits) of your course in Welsh.

Amount: The Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol intend to award up to four bursaries each year, worth £500 each.

This bursary is for undergraduate students studying in Welsh and is open to any subject. The funds will sponsor a trip that is related to the student's studies.

Applicants for 2026/27 will be selected from among the applicants for the Coleg’s Main Scholarship. This application form is now closed.

Amount: £1,000 per year for up to 3 years (total £3,000)

Undergraduate students interested in studying Welsh, either as a first or second language, are invited to apply.

The application form for the Gareth Pierce Bursary is now open until 1 October 2026.

Amount: £3,000 for the first year only

In memory of its former Chief Executive, the WJEC has created the Gareth Pierce Bursary to support students who study at least 33% of their Maths courses in Welsh. Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol is managing the bursary on behalf of WJEC.

Amount: £500 for the first year only

The bursary provides financial support to first‑year undergraduate students who are underrepresented in the media industry and would benefit from extra funding. Eligible students include those who are Black, Asian or Minority Ethnic, disabled, or from low‑income backgrounds (specifically those receiving the highest level of the Welsh Government’s cost‑of‑living grant).

Up to 10 students will be supported. To qualify, students must be studying 20 credits through the medium of Welsh on one of the eligible Creative Industries courses at any higher education institution in Wales.

Eligible courses include:

  • BA Journalism and Communications (ON3D)
  • BA Media and Communications (3M7D)
  • BA Media, Journalism and Culture (R5V2)
  • BA Welsh and Journalism (PQ55)
