Cowrie Foundation Scholarship

The Cowrie Scholarship Foundation wants to fund 100 Black British students through UK universities in the next decade.

Amount: up to £8,000 for each year

This scholarship is for Black African and Black Caribbean heritage, UK domiciled applicants from socio-economically under-represented backgrounds through their chosen university undergraduate degree.

The scholarship offers:

  • home UK tuition fees and a maintenance bursary of up to £8,000 for each year of your course
  • support through Cowrie’s mentorship programme

Eligibility

To be considered for this scholarship you must meet all of the following criteria:

  1. Identify as belonging to one of the following ethnic groups:
    • Black or Black British – Caribbean
    • Black or Black British – African
    • Mixed - White and Black Caribbean
    • Mixed - White and Black African
    • Other Black background
  2. Have firmly accepted an offer of a place by the relevant UCAS deadline on your first undergraduate full-time degree programme at Cardiff University commencing study in the 2024/25 academic year.
  3. Have been assessed for fee status as a 'home' student.
  4. Have a household income of £25,000 per annum or less.
  5. Made an application to your regional student funding authority for income assessed UK government financial support for higher education students.
    • The regional student funding authorities are Student Finance England, Student Finance Wales, Student Finance Northern Ireland and the Student Awards Agency for Scotland.
    • Obtain confirmation you will be in receipt of full financial support for the 2024/25 academic year. Please ensure that during your student finance application, you have given consent to share the information with Cardiff University, as this information will be used to determine eligibility.

How to apply

To help us get to know you, we will ask you for a personal statement of no more than 700 words. This should include:

  • why the scholarship would be beneficial to your studies
  • how it would help you to achieve your academic goals
  • how your education would be of future benefit to your community and/or society
  • the achievements, academically and personally, that you are most proud of (this could include overcoming challenging personal circumstances).

We will also ask some standard questions (for example, date of birth, current address, the name of your school, etc.) and look at where you live and other measures of educational challenges, often referred to as socio-economic metrics.

Please check your eligibility before making an application. Awards may be withdrawn if we later become aware that scholars have not met eligibility criteria or to have provided false information.

The deadline for applications is 3 May 2024, 12:00 GMT. Please note that the university reserves the right to close applications before this date, and so we suggest you apply at the earliest possible opportunity.

A panel of representatives from Cardiff University will assess applications and compile a shortlist. The shortlist will be sent to the Cowrie Scholarship Foundation who will make the final decision. This decision is final and there is no right of appeal. Applicants will hear about the outcome of the application after 15 August 2024, by the first week of September 2024.
