Why study in Welsh?

82% of businesses in Wales say that using the Welsh language adds value to their services. More and more employers are looking for staff with skills to offer bilingual services to their customers.

Studying bilingually helps you to get a deeper understanding of your chosen subject. It enriches your learning experience by offering

  • more choice
  • different perspectives - including a Welsh perspective - on your subject
  • unique and varied experiences while learning and beyond

You will learn the skills, confidence and experience to use Welsh in the workplace and to contribute bilingually to the economic, social and cultural life of Wales.

You can be bilingual citizens - part of the Welsh-language life of Cardiff. The experience will connect you to your bilingual and multilingual peers in the city and across the world.

  • monitor your progress and provide feedback

The thing I enjoyed the most about my studies, without a shadow of a doubt, was the ability to study some through the Welsh language. I enjoyed making the most of every opportunity offered to me to engage and study through Welsh.

Emily Pemberton, BSc Econ International Relations

Improve your language skills

Do you want to improve your confidence to use Welsh in education and business settings? Perhaps you'd like to improve your Welsh grammar? Either way, we provide support for you to study for the Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol's Language Skills Certificate.

Are you an aspiring polyglot? Combine your Welsh language skills with opportunities to learn other languages at university. Some courses will give you the chance to spend a year abroad.

Flexible study options

You can study some modules through the medium of Welsh. Depending on your choice of subject, you could combine English lectures with Welsh-medium tutorials, or choose to do them all in Welsh. It really is up to you.

You can sit your exams through the medium of Welsh, whether you've been studying through the medium of Welsh or not. You could also benefit from smaller seminar groups with other Welsh speakers.

I enjoy studying in Welsh because it gives me an opportunity to practice and improve my confidence, ensuring I don't lose the use of the language. Tutorials for the Welsh group provide more opportunities to ask questions and get help to work through problem sheets.
