The School has established a number of cross cutting units which involve staff from across the three research themes.

These multidisciplinary areas bring together expertise from a wide range of research groups so that staff can contribute specialist knowledge to a key research field. These cross cutting research areas are priorities for governments, industry, the economy and society, both nationally and internationally and include:


Aerospace is one of our major cross-disciplinary research areas, with expertise in materials and structures, propulsion and transmission, lightning protection, and airborne systems.

Digital economy

Creating and developing techniques that will lead to an improved quality of life and a better and safer environment.


Our materials research covers a wide range of activities from the nano- to the macro- scale.

Nanoscience and nanoengineering

We are working to develop theoretical, experimental and technological innovations in nanoscience and nanoengineering.

Smart Engineering

With our partners in China and the UK we have established a Smart Engineering Research and Development Group which aims to provide a holistic approach to smart engineering.


Transport research combines expertise from across the School in energy management, materials and structures, safety and regulation and vehicle dynamics.

Cludiant cynaladwy

Mae ymchwil i gludiant cynaladwy yn ymwneud ag amryw ddulliau cludo isel eu carbon ynghyd ag isadeileddau cysylltiedig megis trydan a hydrogen i gynnal cyfundrefnau cyfredol a hwyluso cludiant y dyfodol.
