Find out if you need a TV licence at university.
Whether you're streaming on your laptop or watching in a shared kitchen, here's what you need to know about TV licensing in residences.
Do I need a licence?
You’ll need a licence if you’re watching or recording programmes on:
- live TV on any channel (including via streaming services)
- BBC iPlayer (live or on-demand)
- live content on platforms like:
- ITVX
- All 4
- Sky Go
- YouTube (live streams)
This applies whether you're watching on a:
- TV
- laptop or desktop
- mobile phone or tablet
- games console
- digital TV stick or box
You don’t need a licence if you only watch on-demand services like Netflix, Disney+, or Amazon Prime Video (excluding live channels).
Check your signal first
Before buying a licence, check the TV signal in your room, especially if you plan to use an aerial or Freeview. Some areas may have limited reception.
Communal TV services
Some residences have TVs in shared kitchens or lounges. These are already covered by a communal licence, including:
- Ensuite Plus at Senghennydd Court and Talybont South
- Ensuite Extra at Talybont North
- Talybont Gate
- family accommodation at Cartwright Court, University Hall, 69 and 71 North Road, 24 and 26 Cogan Terrace, and 80 Miskin Street
A communal TV licence doesn’t cover your bedroom - you’ll still need your own licence if you’re watching or recording TV in your room.
At Talybont North (Ensuite Extra, postgraduates only), TV services are also provided in bedrooms.
Useful advice
You can claim a refund for any months you didn't use your TV Licence if you live in your student accommodation for less than 12 months.
