Studying, working or volunteering abroad as part of your university experience is a great way to broaden your academic knowledge, immerse yourself in another culture and gain skills that could be valued by employers.

We have links with over 300 institutions and can provide you with the opportunity to embark on an overseas placement in Europe and across the world.

An international experience will not only enhance your CV by demonstrating key skills such as communication, flexibility and collaborative working, but can provide you with valuable networking opportunities. Above all, it is the start of a new adventure.

You will experience other cultures and viewpoints, make new friends and share unforgettable experiences during your time abroad. You may also have the chance to embrace a new language and will experience all of this safe in the knowledge that you are enhancing your career prospects at the same time.

European exchange (Erasmus+)

As part of your degree, you may be able to apply for placements across Europe through Erasmus+ depending on your programme of study. Erasmus+ is a European exchange programme that enables students to study or work in a European country for 2-12 months as part of their degree programme. The duration and destination of the exchange is dependent upon your degree programme.

Students who participate in the Erasmus+ Programme (study or work) may be eligible to receive an Erasmus grant to help offset the additional costs of living and studying abroad.

While the UK’s future association with the Erasmus+ programme currently remains unclear, Cardiff University is committed to working with European partners to ensure that students will be able to undertake a period of study or work aboard as part of their degree. The latest information on the UK’s participation in the Erasmus+ programme can be found on the Erasmus+ UK National Agency website.

International exchange

Depending on your programme of study, you may also be able to spend a semester or academic year studying at one of our many exchange partners outside of Europe, as part of your degree.  The duration and destination of the exchange is dependent upon your degree programme.  We have partners globally, including institutions in the USA, Canada, Australia, Hong Kong and South America.

Taking part in a European or international exchange is a great way to immerse yourself in a new culture and make friends from around the world. As an exchange student, you'll get a chance to learn and develop an impressive skill set which will enhance your employability, helping you stand out in an increasingly competitive international graduate job market.

The Global Opportunities Team organises summer programmes which include study, work and volunteering opportunities. These short-term placements take place in a variety of locations around the world and last a minimum of four weeks. Bursaries are provided to students to help cover the costs of going abroad.

Take the opportunity to explore a subject unrelated to your degree, or enhance your degree-related subject knowledge, whilst at the same time enjoying a brand new international experience.

Study programmes take place outside of term time during the summer holidays, making them ideal for students who don't have the opportunity to study abroad as part of their degree programme. You can study in a variety of locations around the world, including Asia, Europe, Latin America and the USA.

Gain work experience abroad during your time at Cardiff. The Global Opportunities Team can help coordinate and support international placements. We offer guidance on both summer placements and professional training years, with funding available for many programmes. Through our international internships, you will have the opportunity to work for a range of global and national companies.

Make a positive contribution to the world during your time at University by taking part in volunteering projects abroad. Join teams of students from across the university and volunteer in locations such as Fiji, Japan, Cambodia and India and more.

Studying, working or volunteering abroad will not only enhance your CV by demonstrating key skills such as cross-cultural communication, flexibility and collaborative working, but can also enable you to broaden your perspectives and develop personally.

An international placement doesn't necessarily have to be more expensive than studying in Cardiff. There is a range of funding sources to make international placements more accessible to undergraduate students.

Students studying or working in Europe currently receive monthly grants through the European Commission; whilst those students going on international exchanges can receive a one-off bursary. There is also a range of bursaries available to successful undergraduate applicants taking part in international short-term programmes.

Students remain eligible for maintenance loans, grants and tuition fee discounts. There is also additional funding available for students from a widening participation background and for disabled students.

I remember sitting in a lecture when I heard about the opportunity to go to Hong Kong University for a summer programme. Despite my immediate interest, I didn’t realise what a fantastic opportunity Cardiff University was offering until I researched the prospect further. The course itself, the destination, and the cultural experience all enticed me to apply, particularly as it was funded! The experience I had was a true ‘once in a life time’
