Nursing for international students

Student Nurse in clinical setting

We are now able to offer overseas students the opportunity to study a Bachelor in Adult Nursing (BN) at Cardiff University.

You will:

  • receive 3 years of study subsidised by a Welsh Government bursary
  • undertake a minimum of 2 years paid employment with NHS Wales
  • receive non-repayable grants worth £3,500 to support living expenses and study
  • be eligible to register with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) as an Adult Nurse on successful completion of the programme

The programme is subsidised by Welsh Government to ensure it remains affordable. As a result, the opportunity to study at Cardiff University is only available to international applicants who commit in advance to paid employment in NHS Wales for a minimum of 24 months, following successful completion of the adult nursing programme.

Students will be included in the graduate nurse streamlining scheme and supported to apply for graduate nursing posts in Wales. Once a suitable post has been offered, graduates must apply for a skilled work visa prior to the commencement of their paid employment. This process will be supported by their potential NHS employer.

As the Scheme includes the opportunity to work in Wales for a minimum of 24 months following the successful completion of training, we must adhere to the good practice guide for employers. This means we are unable to accept applications from red or amber-listed countries as identified on the NHS employers’ website.

All funding and fee information related to the Bachelor in Adult Nursing (BN) programme is presented in the table below:

*The standard tuition fee for international students studying for a Bachelor in Adult Nursing (BN) at Cardiff University is £25,500 per annum. Welsh Government Commissioners (HEIW) will subsidise international students with a contribution of £16,500 per annum towards tuition fee costs. This means that international students studying adult nursing will only be required to pay a tuition fee of £9,000 per year to study at Cardiff University.

This funding support is available to international applicants who can commit in advance to working in NHS Wales for a minimum of 24 months following successful completion of the adult nursing programme.

All international students studying adult nursing will receive non-repayable grants to support with living expenses and study. These non-repayable grants are outlined in the table below. There is no need to make a separate application for these grants. All international students enrolled on the Bachelor in Adult Nursing (BN) programme will receive the same amount, and you are not required to pay it back.

Additional financial support for travel, accommodation, and subsistence when on practice learning placements will also be available, where relevant. You apply for help with placement costs via the School of Healthcare Sciences.

Help for placement travel costs is based on the cost of a return journey from your home (term-time address) to the placement; minus the cost of the return journey from your home (term-time address) to Cardiff University i.e. your normal commute to attend university.

If you have to pay for accommodation at your placement location, you can apply for help with this cost if you also incur accommodation costs for your normal term-time address.

You'll receive guidance on how to apply for financial support once you have enrolled on the programme.

Cardiff is considered to be one of the most affordable UK cities to live in while you study. See our living cost calculator for the average cost of living in Cardiff as a full time, undergraduate student.

The Terms and Conditions associated with this training opportunity will be managed by the Welsh Government commissioners, Health Education and Improvement Wales (HEIW). If your application is successful, you will be required to sign an international nurse training scheme contract. This comprises 3 years of full-time study and a minimum of 24 months of employment in Wales on successful completion of your studies. The international nurse training scheme contract will be issued with the formal offer letter.

By accepting an offer on the adult nursing programme and signing the associated contract with the Welsh Government Commissioners (HEIW), you are required to commit to working within Wales in suitable paid employment for a minimum of 24 months following the completion of the programme. You will be supported to secure suitable paid employment.

  • If you fail to take up suitable employment on completion of the programme you are required to repay the tuition fee subsidy provided by Welsh Government Commissioners (HEIW).
  • If you resign prior to the completion of the 24 months of suitable employment, you will be required to repay a proportion of the tuition fee subsidy provided by Welsh Government Commissioners (HEIW).
  • If you stay within suitable employment for a minimum of 24 months, there would be no costs to repay.

Full contract details will accompany the formal offer letter.

All academic/entry criteria for the Bachelor of Adult Nursing (BN) can be found on the course pages.

As the Scheme includes the opportunity to work in Wales for a minimum of 24 months following the successful completion of training, we must adhere to the good practice guide for employers.
