Year 3 projects

Applied Software Engineering (BSc) students have the opportunity to work with organisations twice in their final year.

One is their major project, and the second is an intensive, emerging technology challenge.

Large Team Project

Semester 2 (spring) - Development, delivery, and deployment of a significant software solution

The Large Team Project is designed to be the capstone of the programme. Typically, these projects will build upon the skills learnt so far in the programme, coupled with the opportunity to take control of a full product development lifecycle. Students will be responsible for managing all aspects of the project, from requirements gathering to delivery of a minimum viable product to the clients. There is flexibility in terms of the topics which might be considered. Examples of previous projects include:

  • a system for detecting anomalies in water meter readings
  • a mobile app for supporting a community of developers
  • visualisations and games associated with the detection of gravitational waves
  • a smart speaker application for supporting vulnerable people
  • a  hospital tour using AR and VR for patients to use before they visit the site

Projects will typically start from around early-February and run for 8-weeks to mid-April (dependent on when Easter falls).

Hackathon

End of February - 3-day hackathon challenge utilising emerging technologies

A 3-day hackathon is held in late-February/early-March that utilises Emerging Technologies (e.g. Internet of Things, wearables, smart materials, VR/AR, robots and autonomous systems, etc). We welcome ideas for hackathon challenges. They ideally should be exploratory, blue skies type challenges that take advantage of students’ creativity and the capabilities of emerging technologies. They might focus on:

  • solutions aimed at individuals or organisations
  • smart cities and wider smart systems
  • specific application areas (e.g. digital health, accessibility, sustainability, etc.)
  • improving aspects of current experiences, e.g. travel, education, etc.
  • addressing the needs of specific populations or professions
