Project requirements

To support our students’ learning and development, projects need to meet specific criteria for us to be able to allocate them within modules.

Projects need to:

  • fit within the degree curriculum and be delivered at the right times
  • be pitched at the right academic level for the students, and to allow students to meet the academic aims of a particular module
  • be relatively short - typically 4-10 weeks, depending on the module to which a project is aligned
  • be realistic about what the students can produce in the time available to them. It should be noted that the learning opportunity for the students is the key output, and the shorter projects could perhaps be seen as small industry challenges. Students may produce a prototype or proof of concept, but will not deliver fully finished software
  • not be time-sensitive, business-critical, or commercially driven
  • be independent of technology and not constrained by licencing or data access
  • be a problem to solve rather than a solution to implement

“One of the things I learnt from this project was to adequately manage expectations and to be adaptable and flexible.”
Diyorbek Sanaqulov, Applied Software Engineering (BSc) student
