International students aren’t eligible for the Disabled Students’ Allowance. However, we can still assess your needs and put in place reasonable adjustments to support your studies. You may also be able to access funding from your home government or sponsor to help with disability-related costs.
Disabled Students' Allowance (DSA)
DSA is a non-means-tested grant that helps cover additional study-related costs of being a disabled student.
DSA can help with:
- specialist equipment (for example software, hardware and ergonomic equipment)
- non-medical helpers (for example specialist study skills support and mentoring)
- general additional disability-related expenses
- extra travel costs
DSA is available through your funding body and is provided in addition to your standard student finance package.
How to apply
Start your DSA application as early as possible - ideally before your course begins, but you can apply at anytime during your studies.
The process may differ for undergraduate, postgraduate, NHS, and Research Council-funded students. Check your funding body’s website for details.
If you have any questions about your application, get in touch.
If you didn’t apply before your course started, you can apply at any time during your studies through your funding body.
Funding bodies
NHS and research funded students
If you’re funded by the NHS or a Research Council, book an appointment with a disability adviser who can support you with your DSA application.

Evidence for your application
You’ll need to provide supporting documentation of your disability as defined by the Equality Act (2010). This could include:
- a letter from your GP or specialist
- a diagnostic report from a qualified assessor (for specific learning difficulties)
Personal care and assistance
Some students need support with daily living activities like cooking, shopping, bathing, and dressing. Please note that this type of personal care is not provided by the university. We'll work with you to provide advice on arranging support with external providers.
- Home students: Social Services are responsible for funding your care package
- International students: You’ll need to arrange and fund this support yourself (e.g. privately, through a sponsor, or charitable trust) before arriving in Cardiff.
