Discover the support and adjustments available to help you thrive in your studies.
We’re here to make sure you have what you need to succeed. That includes recommending reasonable adjustments tailored to your learning needs.
Support in your School
We’ll work with your School to ensure your recommended adjustments are appropriate for your programme of study. These can include:
- lecture slides or handouts provided in advance
- course materials in alternative formats
- access to recorded lectures or permission to record them yourself
- presenting to smaller groups
- support for practical or lab sessions and field trips
- exam arrangements like extra time or rest breaks
Please note, all recommended reasonable adjustments are considered by academic staff and implemented when possible.
Library support
Every library has a disability contact who can help you find books, use the catalogue, or get materials delivered to your home. You’ll also find assistive technology and equipment, including:
- alternative keyboards and mice
- video magnifiers
- height-adjustable desks
- assistive technology on our networked computers
To access this support you can speak with staff in your School library.
Extended library loans
If extended loans are part of your adjustments, your borrowing time will automatically double for most items (except four-week loans). This applies when books are issued and renewed.
Specialist support services
If your Disabled Students' Allowance (DSA) needs assessment or Disability Adviser recommends specialist support, this could include:
Support worker service

- note-taking in lectures
- orientation and mobility around campus
- help in labs and practical sessions

- note-taking and writing
- research and academic writing
- reading fluency and efficiency
- spelling, grammar, and revision strategies

Specialist mentoring
Our specialist mentors can work with you to manage any study-related needs and help you develop skills in areas such as:
- coping with change

- overcoming procrastination and perfectionism
External support
If you're not eligible for Disabled Students' Allowance (DSA), we’ll look to support you in other ways. This includes access to specialist services, such as British Sign Language (BSL), which is an associated cost of being a disabled student. Get in touch with us to discuss funding and access to these services.
If you’ve been recommended an external provider, you’ll need to contact them directly - but we’re here to help if you run into any issues.
