Iaith a Chyfathrebu

I gynnig gwybodaeth ac arbenigedd mewn ymchwil mewn meysydd cymdeithasol, cymhwysol a rhyngweithiol cyfathrebu dynol, iaith ac ieithyddiaeth.

Mae diddordebau ein myfyrwyr yn eang ac rydym yn croesawu ceisiadau gan ymgeiswyr galluog sydd eisiau ymchwilio i bynciau ar draws iaith a chyfathrebu. Mae’r rhaglen PhD yn grymuso ymgeiswyr i gynhyrchu ymchwil arloesol a datblygu’u hun fel ysgolheigion annibynnol a deallusol creadigol.

Mae’r PhD Iaith a Chyfathrebu yn radd dair blynedd (Amser llawn), 5 mlynedd (rhan-amser) sy’n rhoi cyfle i ymgeiswyr ymchwilio i bwnc sydd o ddiddordeb ac yn eu cyffroi ac sydd o fewn arbenigedd staff yn y Ganolfan Ymchwil Iaith a Chyfathrebu.

Nodau'r rhaglen

  • Mae’r rhaglen ymchwil yn cynnig gwybodaeth ac arbenigedd i fynd â chi at rôl mewn addysg uwch neu gyflogaeth sy’n gofyn am sgiliau lefel uwch mewn ymchwil neu wybodaeth pwnc uwch.
  • Mae’r rhaglen yn recriwtio amrywiaeth o fyfyrwyr Cartref/UE a rhyngwladol sydd eisiau ymgysylltu mewn amylchedd ymchwil wedi’i nodweddu gan arbenigedd ymchwil sy’n arwain y byd mewn meysydd cymdeithasol, gynhwysol a rhynweithiol o gyfathrebu dynol, iaith a chyfathrebu

Nodweddion unigryw

  • We offer involvement in a wide range of staff research projects and some opportunities for teaching on the undergraduate programme
  • We also run regular research seminars for postgraduate students
  • There are excellent laboratory facilities for PhD projects involving media and computer technology
  • Full-time PhD students are allocated study spaces with computing facilities, networked information and access to email and the internet
  • PhD students are also eligible to apply for conference travel funding

I find the vibrant research community in ENCAP really motivating because it makes you feel that you are part of something exciting and gives you the opportunity to share ideas and seek advice from other researchers (both staff and students). There is a very supportive atmosphere in which you feel safe to try out ideas and seek feedback on your progress.

Asesiad

The PhD is assessed by submission of a thesis of up to 80,000 words and a viva voce examination.

The MPhil is assessed by submission of a thesis of up to 50,000 words and a viva voce examination.

Yn yr asesiad diweddaraf o ansawdd ymchwil Prifysgol (REF2014) gosodwyd yr Ysgol yn y 10fed safle ar gyfer Saesneg Iaith a Llenyddiaeth. Mae ansawdd uchel iawn yr amgylchedd a’n hyfforddiant ymchwil yn golygu ein bod yn ffurfio rhan o Ganolfan Hyfforddiant Doethurol Cymru (DTC) y Cyngor Ymchwil Cymdeithasol ac Economaidd (ESRC). Wrth fynd ar drywydd eich ymchwil ôl-raddedig yn y Ganolfan byddwch yn ymuno â’r amgylchedd ymchwil rhagorol

Mae’r Ganolfan Ymchwil Iaith a Chyfathrebu yn un o’r canolfannau rhyngwladol mwyaf blaenllaw ar gyfer ymchwil, hyfforddi ac addysgu ymchwil mewn meysydd cymdeithasol, cymhwysol a rhyngweithiol cyfathrebu dynol, y cyfryngau torfol, iaith ac ieithyddiaeth. Rydym yn defnyddio theori ieithyddol ac amrywiaeth eang o ddulliau i archwilio sut mae iaith yn gweithio fel system, a sut mae’n cael ei defnyddio i fynegi hunaniaeth ac adlewyrchu a mowldio agweddau. Rydym yn cymhwyso ein hymchwil i heriau cymdeithasol pwysig, i gynhyrchu gwelliannau mewn meysydd amrywiol gan gynnwys dysgu iaith, gofal Alzheimer, rhyngweithio amlddiwylliannol, rhyngweithio heddlu a’r cyhoedd a chynhwysiant cymdeithasol.

Amgylchedd ymchwil

The School’s research is recognised internationally for its excellence and was ranked in the top ten for the quality of its English Language and Literature research, including Creative Writing, in the latest Research Excellence Framework (REF2014).

Cardiff University has recently joined the world's top 100 universities for the study of English Language & Literature in the 2016 QS World University Rankings.

There is a weekly Postgraduate Research Seminar throughout each semester.  You can find more information about the 15-16 seminars on the blog.

The Forensic Linguistics Research Network also has a blog, CaLL - Cardiff Language and Law.

PhD students in the Centre for Language and Communication Research take part in an annual conference, sharing their research with student peers, academic staff and visiting scholars, and other stakeholders.  You can download a copy of last year’s conference book of abstracts here.

We also run a collaborative project led by the School of English, Communication and Philosophyat Cardiff University. The CorCenCC (Corpws Cenedlaethol Cymraeg Cyfoes (The National Corpus of Contemporary Welsh) is a community driven, interdisciplinary approach to linguistic corpus construction, for more information click here.

Under-the-radar dynamics of on-ward management and inter-team communication in a Welsh hospital

The project will investigate the mechanisms by which multiple communicative goals are attained in realtime hospital management.

Postgraduate study in the School is a gateway to many careers within and beyond academia. Many overseas postgraduates return to lectureships with much enhanced career prospects. Example employers in the UK include Cardiff University, HMRC, Mencap, Poetry Wales Magazine, Teach First, Welsh Government, with jobs that include Crime Intelligence Analyst, Creative Writing Lecturer, Librarian, Poet, Recruitment Consultant, Teacher, Writer.

Doing a PhD in Language and Communication at Cardiff University provided me with the range of resources and infrastructures needed to follow and develop my research interests. The programme pushed me to achieve a high critical and intellectual level and prepared me to become a professional academic, while my colleagues, supervisors and other members of staff were supportive throughout and made my life as a PhD student both rich and enjoyable.

A First or Upper Second class UK honours degree, or equivalent is normally required, in a suitable field (such as Linguistics, Communication, Media Studies, Languages, some Social Sciences, English Literature and Humanities).

All PhD candidates are normally required to take the MA in Language and Communication Research during their first year of candidature and obtain a minimum of 60%.

For non-native speakers of English, an IELTS overall score of 7.5 with at least 7.0 in each sub score is essential.

In the research proposal (around 1,000 words, 3-4 pages) please outline your rationale, proposed methodology, and research objectives, including a short bibliography. This should be appended to your application.

In your personal statement, we would like you to tell us about why you are applying for a PhD – what your current situation is, whether you need a PhD for your own personal development, or for professional reasons, what your experience has been to date as a student/researcher/teacher in the area of English Language and Communication, and why you have chosen Cardiff as an appropriate research environment for your particular area of interest.

In addition to the research proposal and personal statement you will need to provide two academic references and copies of degree certificates and transcripts.

Note: International students pursuing part-time programmes of study are not eligible for Tier 4 General Student) visas and must have alternative leave to remain in the UK if they intend to study at the University in person.
