Community Jobs Compact

Creating job opportunities and equitable recruitment practices for disadvantaged communities in Cardiff.

Community leaders aged between 17 and 25 from Butetown, Grangetown and Riverside came together in 2020 to develop a solution to overcome inequality in applying for jobs, as part of Cardiff Citizens and Citizens Cymru Wales. The result was the Community Jobs Compact – a reciprocal agreement between employers and communities to make recruitment practices more equitable in Cardiff.

Signatories of the Community Jobs Compact commit to paying a real Living Wage to all employees and to tackling underrepresentation in the workforce by committing to blind recruitment and unconscious bias training. The scheme seeks to provide greater job security as well as opportunities for growth, development and mentoring. Cardiff Citizens promotes job opportunities in the community and encourages local people to apply, provides support to applicants, and signposts employers to organisations who could support them.

Following the success of the Community Jobs Compact to date, this project seeks to expand its reach and scope to better understand employment inequality felt across the whole of the southern arc including Caerau, Ely, Trowbridge and St Mellons. The project aims to strengthen relationships with existing scheme employers and secure new membership whilst testing new and innovative ways of promoting jobs and recruitment of candidates from these disadvantaged communities.
