Chartered Institute of Linguists Qualifications

The following prestigious diplomas are the internationally recognised professional qualifications for a career in interpreting or translation.

Diploma in Public Service Interpreting (DPSI)

The Chartered Institute of Linguists qualification Level 6 Diploma in Public Service Interpreting (DPSI) is a qualification for those who work, or would like to work, in the fields of Law, Healthcare or Local Government.

Cardiff University offers a number of courses to help students prepare for the examinations.

Examinations are conducted online with sessions in June and some in November each year. For further information on how to register and sit these examinations, please visit the CIOL qualifications page for the DPSI.

Registration for June examinations is open until early April and candidates are requested to register online directly with the CIOL.

Diploma in Police Interpreting (DPI)

This qualification will cease to be available for registration of new candidates from 1 August 2022.

Existing candidates that are already registered with CIOLQ and have completed one or more units may continue to complete their qualification until 27 June 2025.

Certificate in Translation (CertTrans)

The Chartered Institute of Linguists Level 6 Certificate in Translation degree level qualification provides benchmark evidence of practical working-level translation skills and knowledge.

It has been developed with early career translation skills as its focus, with progression opportunities to higher levels of professional translation in mind for those wanting to work as a translator or to build a career as a freelance translator.

Diploma in Translation (DipTrans)

The Chartered Institute of Linguists qualification postgraduate-level Diploma in Translation (DipTrans) is the gold standard for anyone wanting a career as a freelance translator and meets the need for a high-level professional translating qualification.
