Chinese Proficiency Test (HSK)

The HSK is an international standardised examination that assesses non-native Chinese speakers’ abilities in using Mandarin Chinese language in their daily, academic and professional lives.

Cardiff Confucius Institute within the School of Modern Languages is an approved test centre for the HSK.

Exam fees

The HSK consists of six levels, from HSK 1 (beginner) to HSK 6 (advanced). If you are unsure which level is most appropriate for you, please contact your Chinese language tutor or the Cardiff Confucius Institute for information and advice. Exam fees apply to both internal and external candidates.

Owing to the COVID-19 pandemic, HSK examinations will be held online for the foreseeable future. The next HSK exam will run in September 2020, and we will post the date here as soon as it has been confirmed.

Depending on demand, other test dates may also be available in 2020 so please check back for further details. Please contact your Chinese language tutor or the Cardiff Confucius Institute for more information.

Practice papers

Practice papers for HSK levels 1 to 6 are available from the Hanban website. For general information about the HSK please visit the Chinese Testing website, or the Hanban website.


To register for the exam please complete and return the registration form. Please note that the deadline for registration is 12 days before the test date.
