Rhodri Thomas is a PhD student working with the Alzheimer's disease research group within the MRC Centre.
I joined the MRC Centre for Neuropsychiatric Genetics and Genomics in September 2011. I’ve been working with the Alzheimer’s disease research team looking into what genes underlie this devastating disease. In January 2014 I was given the opportunity to start a PhD and I’ve been looking at a group of molecules called “exosomes”. These are like small bubbles of fat that carry messages between the cells in our bodies. My research is aiming to discover if these messages can be used to help diagnose Alzheimer’s disease.
Public engagement
I thoroughly enjoy participating in public engagement in my role. I think it’s important to inform other people about what work we do in the lab and make sure it’s done in a clear and interesting way. I’ve found it particularly rewarding to be a part of events where the centre has hosted people from the general public who have participated in our research. I have also enjoyed events that engage with school-age students who are considering a degree and career in science.
