Principal duties

Research

• To play a leading role in enhancing and developing the research culture and profile in one of the listed industrial strategy areas: advanced manufacturing and compound semiconductors, and creative industries, including digital technologies, through your own activities, and by leading and mentoring colleagues in major grant applications and the production of high-impact research and 4* publications
• To lead successful funding bids/industrial/commercial funding to underpin applied research where relevant
• To supervise/co-supervise PhD students
• To give invited addresses to professional meetings and conferences at an international level, building networks to develop research outputs and standing within the area of specialism

External Engagement and Internationalisation

• Active contribution to and promotion of the international standing of the University
• Contribute to or lead on university activities that have a beneficial effect on the economy, society, culture, public policy or services, health, the environment or quality of life beyond academia
• Undertake activities that strengthen the international reputation of your discipline and the University

Teaching and Learning

• To contribute to the teaching and leadership of related programmes at all levels, through cutting-edge content and innovative pedagogy
• To play a leading role in relevant teaching and curriculum development at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, keeping Cardiff at the forefront of innovation in UG and PG curricula
• To contribute to the pastoral care of students and to act as a personal tutor
• Contribution to assessment and examination processes, including the Chairing of Examination and other Boards/Committees

Management, Academic Leadership and Citizenship

• To contribute to the strategic planning and operations within the University, actively growing its reputation as an internationally renowned centre for research, teaching and public engagement
• Actively contribute to the development of management and strategic plans relevant to your discipline
• Foster strategic links with other areas within Cardiff University, ensuring collaborative working
• To work collaboratively and successfully across the University community on projects that have public value
• To ensure compliance with legal and regulatory requirements in respect of equality and diversity, data protection, copyright and licensing, security, financial and other University policies, procedures and codes as appropriate
• To take reasonable care for the health and safety of yourself and of other persons who may be affected by your acts or omissions at work in accordance with the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974, EC directives and the University’s Safety, Health and Environment Policies and procedures and to cooperate with the University on any legal duties placed on it as the employer

Knowledge, skills and experience needed

Essential criteria

1. Demonstrable output of 4* publications in one of the following areas: advanced manufacturing and compound semiconductors, or creative industries including digital technologies.
2. Proven track record of external grant capture.
3. Evidence of excellence in teaching and pedagogical innovation.
4. Evidence of the ability to attract high-quality PhD supervisees and supervise to timely completion.
5. Track record of successful senior academic management and leadership.
6. Evidence of effective leadership, including mentoring and a commitment to developing the research and teaching excellence of more junior staff.
7. Demonstrable ability to provide effective leadership and management of staff, such as mentoring/developing research and teaching excellence of junior staff, resulting in high-quality outputs and innovative, fundable collaborative projects.
8. Evidence of ability to participate in wider activities at the University level.
9. Evidence of contribution to and promotion of the international standing of the discipline/University.

Desirable criteria

1. Welsh-language proficiency.
2. Wide-ranging experience in academic institutions and settings such as Research Councils, editorial boards, and prestigious visiting fellowships.

Additional information

Salary range

Professors: Salary in the range of £77,711 to £115,474, depending on experience.

Terms and Conditions of Employment

• These positions are full-time and are fixed-term until 30 September 2030
• Candidates would be required to relocate to Cardiff as part of the Fellowship, with funds available to relocate
• Cardiff offers 37 days per annum of annual leave plus bank holidays, and a USS Retirement Income Builder (RIB) pension
