Leverhulme Trust Early Career Fellowships
We invite researchers to submit an expression of interest for the Leverhulme Trust Early Career Fellowship with Cardiff University as the host organisation.
All candidates must hold a doctorate or have equivalent research experience upon taking up the fellowship. Only those who have not yet held a full-time permanent academic post in a UK university or comparable UK institution will be eligible. How to apply
Expressions of Interest for the 2027 scheme can now be submitted. As an applicant, you must ensure you have discussed your intention to apply with your intended host school well in advance of applying. You are strongly recommended to express your interest in this scheme as early as possible, to comply with internal school deadlines which will be in late 2026.
Please note that the University operates a robust triage and peer review process for all applications to ensure those of the highest quality are submitted to the Leverhulme Trust.
Schools in the Colleges of Biomedical and Life Sciences (BLS) and Physical Sciences and Engineering (PSE)
BLS and PSE will consider applications to the scheme and will discuss suitability with individual candidates. To express interest in this scheme, email risresearchdevelopment@cardiff.ac.uk with the following details:

We will put you in touch with your proposed host school. All applications will be subject to the host school committing to cover the match funding requirements for the scheme.

The College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences (AHSS) will be supporting 2 applications to the 2027 scheme.
The deadline for applications is the 9 November 2026.
Applicants to AHSS must get in touch with their host school via email as soon as possible, to ensure school support and to assign a mentor. Please see the details below for school contacts. Each applicant must submit an outline of their proposed project by the 9th November, including:
- Applicant details: name and confirmation of eligibility for the scheme (see details here)
- Project title
- Project summary (up to 100 words)
- Project outline and fit to Leverhulme principles: originality, significance and contribution (up to 500 words)
- Expected outputs and outcomes (publications, impact, networks, data, etc.)
- Brief justification for selecting this School/department and mentor (100 words)
- A CV of up to 1.5 pages, to include key information such as:
- Academic Profile
- Publications and ORCID ID
- Research Grants and Awards
- Research Independence
- Esteem and Recognition
