Democratising forecasting

22 Rhagfyr 2017

Class receiving computer training

A researcher from Cardiff University is set to deliver a series of workshops in some of the world’s least developed countries to help organizations use forecasting as an effective tool to support decision making.

The initiative, sponsored by the International Institute of Forecasters will provide cutting-edge training in the use of forecasting with R software.

R is an open source programming language and software widely used among statisticians for data analysis, manipulation, visualization and modelling.

The workshops will be provided by Dr Bahman Rostami-Tabar, Assistant Professor in Logistics and Operations Management at Cardiff Business School whose research focuses on supply chain forecasting, forecasting for social good and the interface between forecasting and decision making.

The social impact of forecasting

Dr Rostami-Tabar said: “Forecasting plays an important role in our lives, particularly when we consider the social impact of forecasting. And while a huge amount of work has been done to embed this tool in practice, it’s still not widely used in less developed countries…”

“These workshops aim to provide up-to-date training on the principles of forecasting and create a network of practitioners to conduct research on forecasting with social impact for less developed countries.”

By democratising forecasting in this way, the workshops will create a network of nations, bringing together key decision-makers across the private and public sectors, in agencies and non-profit organisations to focus on the use of forecasting for social good.
