Grangetown Story Project

Grange Pavilion story board

Creating a storyboard to mark milestones from concept to delivery of Grange Pavilion; a community-led centre in the heart of Grangetown.

The idea

To mark and celebrate the opening of the new Grange Pavilion, Creative Cardiff and Community Gateway joined forces to bring to life an embodiment of the Pavilion’s redevelopment, from a residents' group idea in 2012 to the launch of a new £1.8m building in Grange Gardens in 2020.

An illustrator will produce artwork for a story-poster print which will be unveiled on the day of the launch of the Pavilion and then will have a permanent place on the walls of the Pavilion.

Progress

Following a tender process, Cardiff University engagement projects Community Gateway and Creative Cardiff enlisted the talents of local artist Jack Skivens to capture the story of how it happened.

Illustrator Jack Skivens who has worked on the Save Womanby Street and Gwdihw campaign, as well as for Spillers Records and WWF, was keen that the story of Grange Pavilion was told through the eyes of those who were there from the beginning. He started with interviews and research to get a feel of the project, the journey and the people involved.

The storyboard was launched online in August 2020, with coverage on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram, and was very well received by residents. Read about the launch.

Next steps

The framed artwork will be placed on display in Grange Pavilion in September 2020 and A4 and A5 size prints will be available to purchase with all proceeds going to support Grange Pavilion.
