Return to Practice

This programme is available to qualified nurses who have a lapsed registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) (2008), or those nurses who require the opportunity to refresh and update their knowledge and skills following a period of absence from nursing. 

The aim of the programme is to enable nurses to achieve the confidence and competence to deliver quality patient centred care in a supported environment and safely return to nursing.

The programme consists on one 30 credit module which is available at level 5 (diploma level) or level 6 (degree level), depending on previous academic qualifications delivered over 15 weeks and comprises of 150 hours theory and 150 hours clinical practice.

Length of Programme

15 weeks which include 17 study days.

Entry Requirements

Registration with the NMC.

Students may choose to undertake this module at CQFW level 5 or level 6 following discussion with the Programme Manager and subject to the following:          
For those wishing to study at CQFW level 5 the following are required:

• 120 credits at CQFW level 4 in nursing, midwifery or a subject area relevant to nursing verified by certification, (e.g. Certificate in Professional Practice);

OR
• Relevant prior learning or experience that allows for the necessary 120 credits at CQFW level 4 to be accredited via the University APEL procedure.

For those studying at CQFW level 6 the following are required:

• 120 credits at CQFW level 4 in nursing, midwifery or a subject area relevant to nursing verified by certification, (e.g. Certificate in Professional Practice);

• 120 credits at CQFW level 5 in nursing, midwifery or a subject area relevant to nursing verified by certification, (e.g. Diploma in Professional Practice, HE Diploma in Nursing, Access Diploma);

OR

• Relevant prior learning or experience that allows for the necessary 120 credits at level 4 / 120 credits at CQFW level 5 to be accredited via the University APEL procedure.

Potential applicants are encouraged to discuss entry criteria with the Programme Manager on an individual basis as consideration will be given to prospective candidates’ registration history, previous levels of knowledge and experience and relevant experience undertaken while out of professional practice, as recommended by the NMC (2010).

Funding

Funding to undertake the Return to Practice programme is available from the Welsh Assembly Government and is available to nurses permanently resident in Wales.  Nurses working outside the NHS or living outside of Wales are able to self fund for this programme.
