Global-Civic Showcase celebrates impact across Wales and beyond

28 October 2026

The School of Healthcare Sciences’ first Global-Civic Showcase brought colleagues and Global-Civic leads from across Cardiff University, students, partners and community organisations together to celebrate the impact of the School’s collaborative work in Wales and across the world.

Opening the event, Wales’ first Chief Healthcare Science Officer for the Welsh Government, Vicki Heath, delivered a powerful message about our collective responsibility to tackle social inequities for current and future generations.

Visiting International Professor Cordiero from UNICAMP, Brazil, applauded Healthcare Sciences for the wide range of education, research and engagement activities taking place, highlighting how staff, students and collaborative partners are working in tandem to improve health and wellbeing outcomes locally and globally.

Speakers then presented work spanning several continents and communities, including health and wellbeing initiatives in Belgium, rehabilitation projects in France and Patagonia, international collaborations in Hong Kong and Japan, and global maternal health work in Astana. Innovative approaches using virtual reality technology and WhatsApp to empower and support communities across Wales were also showcased.

Cardiff University’s new Global-Civic Dean, Professor Mhairi McVicar, closed the event by recognising the value of diverse perspectives, longstanding partnerships and strong leadership, alongside the mutual benefits that meaningful engagement brings to teaching and research.

Event organiser and the School’s Global-Civic Lead, Diana De, reflected on the importance of building "horizontal" connections across disciplines, professions and communities.

“We all have a responsibility to promote wellbeing for future generations. Strengthening and sustaining existing partnerships, alongside forging new collaborations, can help us promote and embed Global-Civic principles throughout everyday practice. The showcase demonstrated the breadth and depth of Global-Civic activity across the School and how vital co-creation is to creating meaningful impact.”
