From Cardiff to Patagonia: Physiotherapy students gain global healthcare experience

21 October 2026

Cardiff University physiotherapy students have gained first-hand experience of healthcare systems in South America through a unique international learning programme exploring physiotherapy practice, Welsh heritage and global healthcare challenges across Argentina and Brazil.

It highlights the international opportunities available to Cardiff students to develop professional skills, cultural awareness and global perspectives that shape modern healthcare careers.

Students were given an opportunity to examine healthcare delivery in Patagonia’s Welsh-speaking communities. They discovered how Welsh language and traditions have been maintained overseas for more than 150 years.

Students visited hospitals, health centres and schools in Buenos Aires, Trevelin, Gaiman and Trelew. They compared physiotherapy services in Argentina with those in Wales, discussed professional practice with clinicians, and gained valuable insight into the challenges and opportunities facing different healthcare providers.

Huw Owen, a second year Physiotherapy student, said: “Patagonia was well and truly incredible! Visiting the hospitals was an eye-opening experience, learning about how Argentina’s healthcare system compares to ours. I didn’t expect to see such passion for the Welsh language and culture in the schools and communities, and it caught me off-guard - making me feel proud to be Welsh. It was a fascinating experience learning about their culture and enjoying their traditions such as drinking their traditional Mate Tea. I’m so thankful to everyone that helped make this trip unforgettable, and to the lifelong friends and connections I’ve made. Diolch yn fawr iawn. Muchas Gracias!”

Participants reported a warm welcome from colleagues and noted several differences in healthcare settings compared with Wales, including smaller physiotherapy teams, longer working hours, and quieter emergency departments.

Students visited bilingual Welsh-Spanish schools, contributed to Welsh-language activities and engaged with local communities, strengthening cultural ties between Wales and Patagonia. Presentations delivered to young people at Draig Goch Rugby Club further reinforced links with Cardiff University, while professional connections were also established with local physiotherapy practitioners.

It was an unforgettable journey, full of cultural, gastronomic and educational experiences. I am so glad of the opportunity provided by GO and very grateful for the funding. The students were fantastic ambassadors for the University.

Funded through the Taith mobility programme, the project gives healthcare students access to international learning experiences that broaden their clinical and cultural understanding. All healthcare students can apply for Global Opportunities funding for a minimum of two weeks if they have not received funding before.
