Students’ Drinking Behaviour When Studying Abroad

Mae'r cynnwys hwn ar gael yn Saesneg yn unig.

This project will invite 4,000 European university students who participate in the Erasmus programme to study abroad to complete an anonymous online questionnaire to measure their drinking behaviour.

The questionnaire will also measure perceptions of their peers' drinking behaviour and approval of drinking and sociocultural adjustment while abroad.  The questionnaire will be conducted upon their arrival abroad, the five months through their exchange programme and six months after returning home.

40 students will also be interviewed three times to integrate the survey results and offer insights into interpretation.

Project aims

The aims of this project are to:

  • describe students' alcohol use before departure, while abroad, and after they return
  • identify risks and protective factors for alcohol misuse throughout the transition in and out of the study abroad experience
  • develop a logic model to inform future intervention development.

Funding

The project is funded by the European Foundation for Alcohol Research (ERAB) Project Grant.

The project started on 1 March 2015 and will run for two years with a funding of €100,000.
