Welsh language and culture

We are proud of our Welsh identity and are committed to promoting and celebrating the Welsh language and culture, both within the university and beyond.

Yr Academi Gymraeg (Welsh Language Academy)

Yr Academi Gymraeg connect those engaged with the Welsh language, both within the University and across wider communities. The Academi is based in a cosmopolitan, friendly, multilingual and multicultural city - an environment that reflects our aspirations as a Welsh institution with a global outlook.

Yr Academi Gymraeg brings together and coordinates the ongoing work of our staff to engage with and support local, national and international communities. Our academics regularly contribute to public and policy debates on key issues affecting Wales, while our Welsh-speaking educators lead outreach activities with schools across the country. The Academi also seeks to promote and encourage the use of Welsh within the city itself.

One of the Academy-funded projects was a Welsh-language course for Arabic speakers, delivered at the Grangetown Pavilion. This community centre was developed with support from the University’s engagement initiative, the Grangetown Community Gateway.

Welsh festivals

Through partnerships with the Urdd Eisteddfod, the National Eisteddfod, Tafwyl, and other key Welsh festivals, we actively participate in and support these events. We also engage visitors with our research and teaching through stimulating talks, lively discussions, and hands-on activities.
