Celebrating Welsh culture at the Urdd Eisteddfod 2026
22 May 2026
Cardiff University will showcase its vibrant student community, hands-on teaching and cutting-edge research at this year’s Urdd Eisteddfod in Ynys Môn (Anglesey).
Attracting around 90,000 visitors each year, the Urdd National Eisteddfod is one of Europe’s largest youth touring festivals, and celebrates Welsh life and culture.
Between 23-29 May 2026, the University’s stand has a full programme of activities for young people and families to enjoy including:
- A chance to learn more about Welsh language opportunities and experiences for students in sessions with the Students’ Union, Welsh Academy/Academi Gymrae and staff and students from across the University.
- A first look at the University’s Esboniadur Gwyddorau Cymdeithasol (Social Science Glossary), a new resource being developed at Cardiff to help explain key concepts and theories in the social sciences.
- A social science quiz and riddle challenge designed to challenge your thinking and spark your curiosity.
- Inspiring our future Dentists!: Hands-on activities from the University’s School of Dentistry where visitors can testtheir dexterity on training equipment — from practising procedures on phantom heads to placing fillings in realistic tooth models.
- Microbits and Minecraft magic: Dive into a world of discovery with the School of Computer Science. Visitors can crack secret codes, tinker with microbits, build in Minecraft, and explore hands-on tech fun for all ages.
During the week the University’s recruitment team and student ambassadors will be on hand to talk about Cardiff’s vibrant Welsh language and student communities, what it’s like to study at Cardiff University and the opportunities and support available to students. There’ll also be a craft area for younger children.
We’re looking forward to supporting the Eisteddfod yr Urdd again this year and to be part of such a wonderful celebration of Welsh culture and the Welsh language. We hope to be able to inspire children and young people to explore their future at Cardiff University through the range of activities and opportunities we have during the week.
The University’s Dean for the Welsh Language, Dr Angharad Naylor, said: “We are also excited to welcome schools and individuals to our stand to perform or prepare for their competitions. Good luck to all of our students and wider community who may be competing at the Eisteddfod – pob lwc!”
The Urdd Eisteddfod is a competitive festival with over 15,000 children and young people competing during the week in arts-based competitions including singing, poetry, visual art, dancing and performing.
The University’s full line up of events for the week is available here.
