A tale of three heads!
2 June 2008
The A.G. Evans medal commemorates the life and work of the distinguished scientist who led the Chemistry Department at Cardiff from 1952 until 1979. This year it was awarded to Professor M. W. Roberts at a seminar held in his honour and attended by Professor Evans daughter and son in law and some of the top scientists in the field of surface science and catalysis. It is particularly fitting that Professor M. W. Roberts should be awarded this medal; in 1979 he took over from AG as head of physical chemistry at Cardiff and later went on to lead the Department through the difficult times of the merger between UCC and UWIST. At the seminar that followed, Professor Graham Hutchings, who took over from Professor Roberts as head of department in 1996, was one of the contributors to a sparkling programme that also included Professor Hajo Freund (Director of Chemical Physics, Fritz-Haber-Institute, Berlin), Professor Sir John Meurig Thomas FRS and Sir Ronald Mason FRS.
