Summer Term 2012 Vertical Studio BSc 1+2

Between + Nowhere
Rhian Thomas & Rob Stevens

The Between+Nowhere vertical studio asks students to revive a back lane in Adamsdown into a new type of sustainable urban infrastructure, which promotes sustenance through urban agriculture.

Students will be asked to design and make a temporary spatial installation incorporating a working urban growing space in Fox Lane, that will be opened to the public for ‘the continuous picnic’, an event promoting urban agriculture and the Adamsdown Environmental Action Group. The experimental growing and social space will re-use and recycle readily available materials such as old tyres, pallets, and industrial tubes in an innovative and architectural way in its design and construction, and students must also consider the practicalities necessary for growing such as orientation, shelter, rainwater collection and drainage, and access to cultivation beds for gardeners.
