Populous funds full-time PhD studentship looking into how stadium design can support progress to net zero

26 February 2024

We’re pleased to share that Populous has funded a full-time PhD studentship with the goal of progressing understandings of how stadium design, construction and operations can achieve net zero embodied and operational carbon targets.

As global leader in stadium and arena design, Populous has designed and delivered over 3,000 projects across the world over the past forty years, with examples including Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, Wembley Stadium, and the Climate Pledge Arena in Seattle.

Recognising that progress still needs to be made on the sustainability credentials and ways of evaluating these building types, Populous have made this award to Cardiff alumnus Valeska Pack.

The project will be supervised at the Welsh School of Architecture by Dr Eleni Ampatzi and Professor Juliet Davis, with Valeska Pack undertaking the PhD research between the academic and industry partners.

Ms Pack has worked in the past with Populous and has already undertaken three degrees at Cardiff University including our MSc in Environmental Design of Buildings. She begins her doctoral research with the benefit of extensive experience as an architect and project manager, having worked on many sports stadia, arenas, and major international events, placing her in an exceptionally strong position to undertake this important research.
