Dr. Wassim Jabi is passionate about the role of digital tools in supporting and enhancing design creativity. He studied architecture and earned his Masters and Ph.D. from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, USA. For his Ph.D. dissertation he researched the role of computers in helping geographically distributed teams work together on the same project. He has published widely on this topic and developed several pieces of software that help designers with their tasks - from software that visualises light and shadows to generative parametric design systems.

While in the USA, he lead the Association for Computer-Aided Design in Architecture (ACADIA) and taught at various universities before deciding to move to Europe in 2008. He is currently a Senior Lecturer at the Welsh School of Architecture, Cardiff University where he leads the digital design area and is a member of the editorial board of the International Journal of Architectural Computing (IJAC).

Dr. Jabi has developed deep expertise in generative and parametric design - a topic on which he has written a book (Laurence King Publishing, London.). His current research involves the integration of building energy simulation in the early phases of design and the integration of parametric design and digital fabrication. He has recently secured a significant grant to purchase a large 6-axis high accuracy industrial robot to investigate innovative digital fabrication processes of architectural components and structures.

Research interests

Digital Design Methods. In particular, the use of digital tools in:

  1. the conception of architectural space and form
  2. parametric investigations
  3. collaborative processes
  4. digital fabrication
  5. design visualisation and animation. I also maintain an active interest in the physical configuration of the design studio to enable the creative use of digital technology
