Research Activities
Matthew is an architect and researcher in Design Research Unit Wales. He is currently researching low/zero carbon non-domestic buildings as part of the Low Carbon Research Institute’s Low Carbon Built Environment project.

Research Interests

My research and practice centres on a cluster of topic areas, which come under the broad heading of place and regionalism, including:-

  • Place and local distinctiveness
  • The ‘as found’ as an approach to design.
  • Contemporary architecture and urbanism in market towns.
  • Sustainable and low energy design.

Matthew is currently undertaking a PhD by design exploring approaches to design and urbanism in the UK market town. My research aims to learn from continental approaches to urbanism and expolore their application to the UK. This is being tested through the development of a community led masterplan for Ruthin, North Wales by DRU-w and studies carried out in Ludlow.
