Information for Needs Assessors

The following information is for DSA Needs Assessors who are completing DSA Study Needs Assessments with current or applicant students of Cardiff University. The information and links can be included in Needs Assessment reports, as needed.

Non-medical help support

Microsoft Office ProPlus

Students are able to access Microsoft Office ProPlus free of charge on up to five devices during their time here. This is available on up to five Windows / Mac devices, and up to five mobile devices (iOS or Android).

Assistive software

The following assistive software is available on all networked campus computers.

  • Supernova (screenreader software)
  • TextHELP Read & Write Gold (text-to-speech software)
  • MindView (mind mapping software)
  • CMAP Tools (concept mapping software)

Students can also request access to JAWS (screen reading software) on networked campus computers.

Printing, photocopying and scanning

Students are able to print in both black and white and colour from networked computers on campuses and wirelessly from personal computers via their myPrint account (not including smartphones and tablets). The default print settings are A4, black and white and double-sided. However, students have the option to print on A3, single-sided and in colour. Further more specialist printing options are available through Graphic Services.

Scanners are available in libraries across campus, which allow students to scan directly to their email accounts. This service is free of charge, although students do need to have credit of £0.01 on their myPrint account to use the service.

£200 contribution towards DSA computers

A means-tested emergency fund is available through the University's Advice and Money team to assist students who are unable to pay the £200 contribution towards recommended DSA computers. Students should contact the Advice and Money team for advice.

Counselling and Wellbeing Service

We have a Counselling and Wellbeing Service, which is open to all Cardiff University students. The service offers a range of services including one to one appointments, a drop in service and interactive workshops.

SPSS

We provide free access to the SPSS statistical processing software to all Cardiff University students. This is available through our IT department.

Cardiff Maths Support Service

To support concerns with numeracy skills, access to the Maths Support Service is encouraged. The service is freely available to all Cardiff University students regardless of their subject and provides mathematical and numeracy support.

Academic skills classes

Help and support to undergraduate students to develop the skills necessary for success at University is available through academic skills classes. Skills are developed through a series of 50 minute classes.

(Note: Academic Skills classes provide general learning support. They are not provided by specialist support workers and are not intended to support students with specific learning difficulties).

Endnote

Students have access to Endnote desktop on all University computers and within the University network. For use outside of the University, students have access to Endnote web which is again free of charge. Endnote desktop can be purchased at a reduced rate under university student licensing agreements.
