Voices of war and peace: The Great War and its legacy

Project details

Voices of War and Peace: the Great War and its Legacy is a First World War Engagement Centre funded by the Arts & Humanities Research Council and in partnership with the Heritage Lottery Fund.

The University of Birmingham Centre is a joint initiative across the Midlands with Birmingham City University, Newman University, the University of Wolverhampton and the University of Worcester, and further afield with the University of Glasgow, Manchester Metropolitan University and Cardiff University.

The Engagement Centre will support a wide range of community engagement activities, connecting academic and public histories of the First World War as part of the commemoration of the War’s centenary which began in 2014.

We will be working alongside a number of cultural institutions in Cardiff and beyond to engage members of the public in a discussion about WW1.

Research impact

The focus of this project is, by its very nature, wide in its temporal scope: it casts its gaze on events from long ago but at the same time there are immediate and continuing opportunities to see the impact of the project on current centenial activity and on work for the immediate and more distant future.

The project thus seeks to inform the work of:

  1. Museum and Heritage Site Professionals
  2. Policy Makers
  3. Educational programmers
  4. Academic researchers/students
