The 146th European Study Group with Industry (ESGI146) is taking place in Cyprus, 3-7 December 2018. It is co-organized by the Cardiff School of Mathematics, the Mathematics for Industry Network (MI-NET, COST Action TD1409), and the EU project SciShops.eu, in collaboration with the University of Cyprus, where it is hosted. In these intensive weeklong workshops, which were initiated in Oxford University in 1968, teams of mathematical modelers and data analysts work on real-life challenges with the aim to create long-term academia-industry collaborations.

ESGI146 is also a “co-creation event with society” and the challenges should be linked to societal impact. They can come from non-profit organizations or companies. 3-4 societal challenges are currently being finalized by the Organizing Team and in collaboration with an eminent Scientific Board.

More than 30 researchers from Cardiff and other leading universities will come together to tackle these challenges. Registration is free for researchers and all local expenses are covered through grants from MI-NET, Scishops.eu, and sponsorships from the University of Cyprus, KPMG (strategic partner), ExxonMobil and the British High Commission in Cyprus.

Organising team: Dr Katerina Kaouri (Chair, Cardiff/MI-NET/Scishops), Dr Margarita Zachariou (Vice-Chair, Cyprus Institute of Neurology and Genetics/MI-NET) and Dr Ian Griffiths (Oxford Centre for Industrial and Applied Mathematics).
