Acute Vascular and general surgery ward
Key Learning Opportunities:
D2 West is a busy 31 bedded acute vascular and general surgical ward. Patients are admitted to the ward via various routes. Many are admissions from the Surgical Assessment Unit (SAU), but there are also emergency admissions from A&E and clinic. Patients are commonly presenting with diabetic and smoking related complications such as necrotic feet and other vascular disorders. The ward also regularly cares for patients with pancreatitis, gallstones, biliary colic, abdominal pain, perianal abscesses and prolapsed haemorrhoids.
Whilst on the ward students will have the opportunity to be involved in the essential care of the above mentioned patient group. This will include participating in the admission and discharge of patients, multidisciplinary team working, administration of medicines, pre and post-operative care, dressings and diabetic care, all under supervision of a trained mentor.
There are also additional learning opportunities which include time spent with the advanced nurse practitioners, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, speech and language therapists, infection control team, pain team and outreach team. Students are also able to go to theatre and the vascular clinic. All these opportunities are to be discussed and arranged with the students mentor.
