Medical Illustration (PgCert)
The Postgraduate Certificate (PGC) is suitable for new entrants to the profession seeking qualified medical illustrator status and wishing to undertake postgraduate level studies. The course is also offered to mature, practising medical illustrators who wish to undertake a postgraduate course related to their profession. The PGC is accredited by both the BIPP and IMI and successful students are eligible for full membership of both organisations and admission to the voluntary Register of Medical Illustration Practitioners. This register will form the basis of the State Register of Clinical Photographers in due course.
The PGC has two tracks, one for clinical photographers and the other for graphic designers. The course is delivered as 14 month, part-time distance learning, with two study periods in Cardiff. The course starts in January each year and all applications should normally be made before the preceding October.
The course consists of five modules, two core, two discipline specific, and one specialist optional module. Each core module commences after the taught sessions in January and July, followed by an eight week period when the assignment is undertaken. The discipline specific and specialist modules are totally distance learning. The course is credit rated for 60 credits and some or all may count towards further postgraduate study.

A Professional Portfolio must be produced by each student to demonstrate application of theory to practice, and competence to practice.
Who is this course aimed at?
All applicants must be practising medical illustrators. The course is offered to those who are:
1. practising as clinical photographers with either a first degree or equivalent in photography, film-based media, or a media course majoring in these topics.
2. practising as medical graphic designers with either a first degree or equivalent in graphic design.
Applicants, who have considerable experience in medical illustration and an HND or C&GLI Advanced Certificate in a relevant subject, with or without a medical illustration qualification, will be considered via the APEL route.
