Ongoing research involves investigations of residential care and the experiences of older adults. This includes the process of transition to full-time care, and the effects of the care home on individual’s physical and psychological well-being and their balance of occupation. Future plans are to evaluate the possible changes following intervention to address some of the recommendations made in previous studies.
The research area has been ongoing since presenting at the World Federation conference in Stockholm in 2002. It has adopted a qualitative approach in which narrative, the telling of life stories, has been used to uncover the personal experiences of residents both pre and post transfer to residential care. It was determined that such an approach with a vulnerable group would be less anxiety provoking and findings have revealed a wealth of rich, valid and reliable data.
The team involved in this study of the ageing process also consist of Dr Jane Prince (University of Glamorgan) and Dr Val Rees (Cardiff University).
More recently (since 2009) part of a team that has developed the TRAMM model, to facilitate and track Continuing Professional Development. This is currently in its pilot evaluation stage.
Since 2011 undertaking research exploring student, practitioner and service user involvement in curriculum Design.
