Funded schemes

There are a number of funded schemes open to members (and ex-members) of the Armed Forces.

Enhanced Learning Credits (ELC) scheme

We are an Approved Learning Provider on the ELC scheme. This scheme promotes lifelong learning among members of the armed forces, and can provide financial support.

Troops to Teachers

£40,000 funding is available to veterans to study at undergraduate degree level - find out more about train to Teach in Wales.

Armed Forces Bursary

We also offer a bursary for armed forces veterans, details of which can be found on our bursaries page.

Training opportunities

Depending on the level of training you wish to explore, there are a number of opportunities at the University.

At the CPD Unit, we are responsible for professional development. There are a number of options available:

Short training courses

We have a wide range of short professional development courses, most of which are held at Senghennydd Road. This programme covers subjects such as marketing, online communications, project management and managing people. This type of course is suitable for you if you're looking to improve your skills in a particular area, or if you need to gain new skills in order to develop/change your career. Many of these courses involve transferable skills - for example, project management, leadership, effective communication/presentation techniques and so on.

There are also a number of medical short courses, run by the School of Medicine and School of Healthcare, offering vital professional development training at cost-effective prices.

Most of our courses take place over one or two days; we run courses multiple times a year, always on weekdays (usually outside school holidays).

Postgraduate level taught modules

The University offers a select range of modules that can be taken on a standalone basis for CPD. This means you can learn flexibly, and develop your career, whilst still balancing your existing work and life commitments.

Examples of current modules offered in this way are Sustainable Transport Policies, Translation of Minority Languages, Executive Masters in Business Administration, and Environmental Building Studies.

This 'standalone' approach allows you access to all the research and expertise available at the University, and test out your appetite for a full postgraduate degree, without committing to a full postgraduate degree.

In most cases, you will be joining full-time postgraduate students for one module. The modules we offer have been carefully chosen to make sure they are suitable to be taught in this way.

We welcome applications from those who may not have the traditional entry requirements, but who can demonstrate work experience or prior learning.

CPE (Continuing and Professional Education)

At the CPD Unit, our role is to support individuals and business to access professional development opportunities. There is a also separate team at the University (Continuing and Professional Education) who can advise you on part-time adult education.

The CPE team offers a wide range of part-time courses, at levels and times to suit you. Many of these courses have no entry requirements - all you need is an interest in the subject and a willingness to explore it in the company of others. In order to make it as easy as possible for you to study at the University, courses are scheduled during the day, in the evenings and at weekends. Several courses are repeated throughout the year. Some courses are available online, which gives you the flexibility to study from home.

Pathways to a degree

The pathways programme is an alternative to A-level and access qualifications as it is taught and assessed in similar ways to first year undergraduate courses. There is lots of information available on the CPE website pages, including course listings and how to apply.
