Our global humanities research

ENCAP students

Transformational interdisciplinary research with a global outlook.

We’re committed to disrupting convention through critical rigour and creative energy.

Bringing together expertise from across the arts and humanities to address important cultural, social and political questions, our research explores issues from both historical and contemporary perspectives, helping to deepen understanding and inform future thinking.

Our strengths are rooted in our 5 interlinked departments.

  • In history, archaeology and heritage, we combine scientific investigation of past societies with a commitment to preserving and sharing history and heritage for future generations.
  • In music, we explore themes such as politics, place and memory through both critical study and creative practice.
  • Research in Welsh language and culture shapes understanding of contemporary Wales (and opportunities to shape its future) and its rich literary and linguistic heritage. Across literature, languages and linguistics, we study texts, languages and communication from the medieval period to the present day, across a wide range of cultures and media. This work contributes to knowledge and understanding across the cultural sector.
  • In religion and theology, our research examines religious traditions from the Mediterranean to East Asia, encouraging informed debate and new perspectives.
  • Our philosophers investigate questions about the mind, ethics and values, applying philosophical insight to the challenges facing society today.

Our work has impact on the cultural industries, policymakers, practitioners and the public, reaching from our home in Cardiff across the world.

Through partnerships and collaboration, we generate new knowledge and turn research into meaningful impact. By providing leadership in humanities research in Wales and beyond, we contribute to global conversations and help shape the future of knowledge and society.
