About us

Two students working and talking

We're focused on the big questions shaping our lives.

What does it mean to be human now and in the future? Why do societies change? How are beliefs shaped? How is conflict and division created? How do we create and convey identity and values? How do we communicate across borders and languages? How do we preserve our shared heritage?

Our diverse and welcoming community is committed to tackling some of the biggest questions facing people - across cultures and continents - while drawing on knowledge about the past, the concerns of the present and the potential to imagine new futures.

We’re teaching future generations to think for themselves, challenging them to develop their own arguments, connect ideas and patterns, and commit to their thinking with evidence and research.

Our subjects

Our school is organised into 5 departments:

  • History, Archaeology and Heritage
  • Welsh
  • Languages and Linguistics
  • Literatures, Creative Writing, Music and Visual Cultures
  • Philosophy and Religion

Academic strengths

Our faculty work in fields from archaeology to history and heritage to creative writing, literatures, languages and linguistics, music and visual cultures, as well as philosophy and religion. Through research, practice and cross-cultural engagement, we’re working to better understand the human experience past and present and determining new, improved futures for communities in Wales and the world.

Our graduates gain the confidence, empathy, and critical thinking skills needed to thrive in today’s society and to lead with confidence on the opportunities of the future. These skills represent independence, experience, reasoning, and judgement – deeply human and valuable attributes in a world of AI and algorithms.
