Universidade Estadual de Campinas
Our strategic partnership with one of Brazil’s leading universities helps to create research and educational opportunities for staff and students.
The Universidade Estadual de Campinas, commonly known as Unicamp, was established in 1966 and is one of Latin America’s leading research intensive universities and a major powerhouse of Brazil’s science and innovation. Based in the São Paulo state region, it has affiliate campuses in both Limeira and Paulínia.
Through establishing this Strategic Partnership, we have set-up a staff mobility fund to support research collaborations between our two institutions in all subject areas. We will also explore opportunities for undergraduate exchange in the form of short-term Summer Schools and the development of collaborative PhD programmes across all disciplines.
This partnership builds on long-standing academics links between Cardiff University and Unicamp, formalised first in 2015 through a Memorandum of Understanding. The Memorandum gave rise to a series of research focussed visits, bringing some 100 staff across the two institutions in contact with each other, and further growth in joint publications, notably in computer science, dentistry, geosciences, electrical engineering and chemistry.
It is anticipated that the signing of the Strategic Partnership Agreement in December 2018 will strengthen and deepen the relationship. The Strategic Partnership aims to further utilise internal seed corn funding as well as external funding sources to develop long-term research collaborations, support student and staff mobility schemes and establish a framework for the development of collaborative PhD programmes.
Collaboration seed fund
As part of our strategic partnership with UNICAMP, a mobility fund has been established to support outward academic visits to develop research, education and professional services collaborations between the institutions. The fund will support the development of joint bids for external funding and/or discipline specific outputs.
The fund will support staff to develop collaborative research, teaching and professional services projects that have clear outcomes and a pathway to develop and sustain the collaboration.
A lead applicant is required from both universities. Lead applicants must be staff on continuing appointments or fixed term staff whose contract extends beyond the term of the funding.
The aim of the fund is to support the outcomes stated in the International Strategic Partnership Agreement. Priority will be given to high quality proposals that support one or more of the following strategic aims:
- collaborative teaching initiatives that support the student experience
- exchange of academic and professional knowledge, including sharing of good practice
- research collaboration, including the promulgation of research outcomes
- acquisition of joint research funding
- joint centres of teaching/professional excellence/research
- exchange programs, including researchers, academic and professional staff
- joint activities, including meetings, seminars, symposia, lectures, workshops, and conferences
- partnerships with industry in Brazil and Wales/the United Kingdom
Funding decisions will be made by a joint committee made up of members from both institutions and applications will be assessed on the following criteria:
- project impact
- partnership impact
Applications will be considered by a panel at Cardiff University, in consultation with UNICAMP.
